BUSINESS PROGRAM (tentative)

The PatSurf Business program is designed to encourage in-depth discussion and sharing of information between delegates on a variety of topics relevant to Patent Attorneys throughout the world.

Each day, presentations will be made by 2-4 delegates who volunteer to make an initial presentation (preferably using Powerpoint) followed by questions/discussion.

The following topics are tentatively proposed, however, other topics will be considered….please contact Dan Berger for expressions of interest in doing a presentation on any of the below topics, or, for any alternative topic suggestions.

SESSION 1 :

The Patent Attorney Office of the Future

Over the last few years, the way in which we have worked has undergone considerable change. Most Patent Attorneys have completed the transition from paper files to electronic files, and, working remotely is now very realistic. Various forms of automation, designed to improve our efficiency are now creeping into our practices, including voice recognition software, AI software designed to draft specifications and other IP documentation, etc.

Our presenters will outline their experiences with their latest technology implementations, discuss whether they live up to their expectations, and encourage delegates to share information about new and upcoming products which propose to change the way we will work in the future.

SESSION 2 :

PCT Drafting Tips

Most of us have considerable experience in drafting Patent specifications for our domestic clients. However, with the ever increasing divergence in the examination and other requirements of the various national Patent Offices, it is imperative that these be taken into consideration when drafting patent specifications, such as PCT patent applications, to meet international 'best practice'.

Our presenters will provide practical tips for us to take into consideration when drafting patent specifications, such as, how to draft to minimise ‘national phase’ patent filing fees, and, what terminology should be avoided in certain jurisdictions to avoid adverse interpretation of the scope of claims, etc.

SESSION 3 :

Keeping our Clients happy?

Our clients are generally happy provided they feel they are getting value for money. In the past, Patent Attorneys traditionally charged a combination of fixed fees for filing, for requesting examination, etc., and, hourly rates for prosecution actions, but is this what's required in the future?

Our presenters will lead a collaborative discussion on new and innovative fee proposal models which have been offered to or requested by clients, their experiences as to whether these have worked to the advantage of the client and/or the Attorney, etc. and, seek suggestions as to alternative fee options which may be of interest to our clients.
